The World Health Organization recently deemed it carcinogenic, falling into the same category as asbestos and arsenic. New York City transit workers and others have died of lung cancer after spending years breathing it in in bus depots. And yet the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has not set a safe exposure level for diesel fumes, a fact lamented March 7 by worker health advocates at a forum on lung cancer and diesel sponsored by the New York Committee for Occupational Safety & Health and the AFL-CIO New York City Central Labor Council.
